Seawall repair in Punta Gorda
Cracked cap, gaps between panels, soil sinking behind the wall? Tell us what you see. We pass it to independent marine contractors in Charlotte County, and they quote you directly.
Free to ask. We are a referral service, not a contractor.
Check your canal first
The City of Punta Gorda maintains canal seawalls under its canal maintenance program, and after Hurricane Ian it rebuilt many of them with FEMA funding. If you live on a city canal, ask the City about your wall before you pay anyone.
Who owns the wall. Whether your stretch of wall is in the City's program is the City's call, not ours. Call Public Works with your address. We won't guess from a map, and a contractor shouldn't either.
The Ian rebuild. The City split Punta Gorda Isles into five work zones, each with a repair schedule that looks six months ahead and is updated monthly. FEMA reimburses most of the City's cost; the City covers the rest.
If crews are coming. In rebuild zones the City has asked owners to clear anything within 10 feet of the seawall, including electrical and underground lines, and to move boats and floating docks until the work is done. Check the City's current notice for your zone.
If the wall is yours. When the City confirms your wall isn't in its program, or you're outside city limits in Port Charlotte, Englewood or Rotonda, the repair is yours to arrange. That's where one quote request saves you a round of phone calls.

How a request works
We're a referral service. We don't own barges or pour concrete. We read your request, pass it to independent marine contractors who work in Charlotte County, and they contact you to look at the wall and quote. You deal with them directly, and you decide.
Before you sign, check the contractor's Florida licence with the state (DBPR) and ask who pulls the permits.

Rules a seawall job can touch
Three levels of government can have a say over a wall in Charlotte County: the county building permit, the state's environmental rules (FDEP), and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where federal waters are involved. Pick your job to see which ones usually come up.
Charlotte County
- Residential seawall permit, with a plan that meets county codeVoid if work hasn't started within 180 days
- State and federal approvals filed with the countyWhere the work is over state or federal waters
State: FDEP, Fla. Admin. Code 62-330.051
- (12)(a) Building, replacing or repairing seawalls or riprap in man-made waterwaysExempt, conditions apply
- (12)(b) Restoring a wall damaged by a discrete event in the last yearNo more than 18 in. waterward of the old wall
- (12)(c) A wall in wetlands or surface waters between and adjoining existing wallsExempt, conditions apply
- (12)(d) Batter piles, king piles or a cap used only to stabilize and repair a wallIf they don't impede navigation

Federal

City of Punta Gorda

An FDEP exemption is not automatic: each one has conditions in the rule, and work outside them needs a permit. Confirm with FDEP's district office, or ask your contractor to show you which rule they're relying on.
What seawalls cost here
We don't set prices; contractors do, after they see the wall. The only local figures we can point to are for full replacement, from a Punta Gorda contractor quoted by WGCU in 2023. Treat them as a market range, not a rate card.
What moves the number: length of wall, whether crews can reach it from the water or only by land, tie-backs and anchors, the cap, removal of the old wall, and permits.

Questions owners ask
Is my seawall maintained by the City of Punta Gorda? It may be. The City maintains canal seawalls under its canal maintenance program and has been rebuilding walls damaged by Hurricane Ian in Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles. Only the City can confirm whether your stretch of wall is included, so call Public Works with your address before you hire anyone.
Do I need a permit to repair a seawall in Charlotte County? Plan on it unless your contractor confirms otherwise. Charlotte County's residential seawall permit asks for a plan that meets county code, plus any FDEP or Army Corps approvals when the work is over state or federal waters. The permit becomes void if work doesn't start within 180 days.
Is seawall repair exempt from FDEP permits? Often, with conditions. Florida's rule 62-330.051(12) exempts building, replacing or repairing seawalls or riprap in man-made waterways, and batter piles, king piles or a cap used only to stabilize and repair a wall. An exemption isn't automatic, so confirm it with FDEP's district office or your contractor.
My wall was damaged in a storm. Does anything change? Rule 62-330.051(12)(b) covers restoring a seawall or riprap damaged by a discrete event within the last year, as long as the new wall sits no more than 18 inches waterward of the old one. Don't let the year run out while you wait.
When does the Army Corps of Engineers get involved? When the work is in navigable or federal waters. Charlotte County lists seawalls among the work an Army Corps permit can cover, and asks for that permit with your application when it applies.
How much does seawall replacement cost in Punta Gorda? A local contractor told WGCU in 2023 that a typical concrete replacement ran in the high $40,000s to about $50,000, and an older estimate put 80 feet of wall at $30,000 to $40,000. Both are dated. Your quote depends on length, access, anchors and permits.
Are you a seawall contractor? No. We're a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent local marine contractors, who quote you directly. Check any contractor's Florida licence with DBPR before you sign.
What should I send with my request? Your street and canal, the rough length of wall, what it's made of, and what you see. Photos at low tide of the cap, the face of the wall and the yard behind it help a contractor most, along with any City notice you've received.
