Dock repair and replacement in Punta Gorda
Loose boards, a leaning piling, a dock lost in a storm, or no dock yet. Tell us what you have and independent local marine contractors quote the repair or the new build, often alongside any seawall work.
Free to ask. We are a referral service, not a contractor.
What dock work covers
Most dock requests on a canal lot fall into a few kinds:
- Loose or rotten boards. Re-decking part or all of the dock.
- Damaged pilings. Leaning, cracked or worn pilings that hold the dock up.
- Storm damage. Sections torn loose, or the whole dock gone.
- A new dock. Where there has never been one, or a replacement for one that wasn't worth fixing.
A dock usually meets the wall or sits close to it, so dock work is often quoted together with seawall repair. If you want a lift on the dock, see boat lift installation. When the City rebuilt seawalls after Hurricane Ian, it asked owners in the work zones to move floating docks first.
What to look at before you ask
Walk the dock at low tide, when the pilings show most. Photograph each problem with something for scale, and note whether it sits on the dock or where the dock meets the wall.
Decking. Boards that flex underfoot, split, curl or have fasteners working loose. A few bad boards can mean a re-deck of one section; widespread softness points to more.
Pilings. Look for lean, cracks, or wear where the piling meets the water. Damage there is hard to judge from above, which is why contractors want to see it.
Connection to the wall. Gaps between dock and wall, loose hardware, or a ramp or ladder that has shifted. If the wall is moving, the dock will follow.
Storm damage. Take photos of lost sections and displaced pieces before cleanup, and note which storm it was. Contractors and insurers both ask.
What a dock quote can include
Expect the quote to name what is being replaced, the size of the dock, who pulls the permits and how long it takes.
We have not found published local prices for dock work, so we don't give a number. Ask each contractor to price the same scope so the quotes can be compared.

What to have ready
None of this is required to ask for a quote. Each item saves a phone call and gets you a firmer number from the site visit.
If a seawall job is coming too, say so in the request. The dock may have to be moved or rebuilt around the wall work.

Rules that can touch a dock
Private docks have their own state exemption, but it comes with limits on size and use. Ask the contractor which rule they are relying on, and who pulls any permit the job does need.
FDEP exemption. Fla. Admin. Code 62-330.051(5)(b) covers private docks, piers and docking facilities. Size and use conditions apply, so a larger dock or one used another way may fall outside it. Confirm with FDEP's district office or your contractor.
Army Corps. A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers permit may be needed where the work is in navigable or federal waters. Ask whether it applies to your canal or shoreline.
County. Charlotte County has permit rules of its own. Ask the county building department or your contractor whether your dock work needs a county permit, and who applies for it.
The City. In Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles the City asked owners in its rebuild zones to move floating docks during wall work. Check the City's current notice, and its canal program, before you spend on a dock.
Dock repair questions
Do I need a permit to repair or replace a private dock? Maybe not from the state. Rule 62-330.051(5)(b) exempts private docks, piers and docking facilities, with conditions on size and use. County and Army Corps rules are separate, so ask your contractor to confirm in writing what applies.
Can a dock be quoted together with seawall work? Yes, and it often makes sense, because the dock meets the wall. Mention both in one request so contractors price them on the same visit. See seawall repair.
My dock was destroyed in a storm. What should I do first? Photograph what is left and what is missing before cleanup, and note the storm. Then ask for quotes. If a seawall was damaged too, ask the contractor to look at both.
The City is rebuilding my canal's seawall. What happens to my dock? In its rebuild zones the City asked owners to move boats and floating docks until the work was done. Check the City's current notice for your zone.
How much does dock repair cost? We haven't found published local figures for dock repair or replacement, so we don't give one. The price depends on the dock's size, the pilings and the materials, and a site visit sets it.
Can I add a boat lift to the dock? Often, but the dock has to carry it. Tell the contractor about the lift when you ask for dock quotes. See boat lift installation.
Describe the dock and its problem. A local contractor quotes the work.
