Seawall questions from Punta Gorda owners
Short answers on the City's canal program, permits, costs and working with contractors. Rules and prices change, so treat these as a starting point and confirm with the City, the county or your contractor.
Free to ask. We are a referral service, not a contractor.
City canals
Is my seawall maintained by the City of Punta Gorda? It may be. The City maintains canal seawalls under its canal maintenance program and has been rebuilding walls damaged by Hurricane Ian in Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles. Only the City can confirm whether your stretch of wall is included, so ask Public Works with your address before you hire anyone. See Punta Gorda canal seawalls after Hurricane Ian.
Who paid for the City's Ian rebuild, and how long was it meant to take? As reported, FEMA reimburses 95% of the City's cost and the City pays the remaining 5%. Reporting in 2023 said the City's rebuild contracts required completion within 18 months of starting. We haven't found a current status, so check the City's canal pages for your zone.
What does the City ask owners to do when crews come? In its rebuild zones the City has asked owners to clear everything within 10 feet of the seawall, including electrical and underground lines, and to move boats and floating docks until the work is finished. Check the City's current notice for your zone, because requirements can change.
Permits
Do I need a permit to repair a seawall in Charlotte County? Plan on it unless your contractor confirms otherwise. Charlotte County's residential seawall permit asks for a plan that meets county code, plus any FDEP or Army Corps approvals when the work is over state or federal waters. Ask the contractor who pulls each permit.
Does the county permit expire? It becomes void if work doesn't start within 180 days. If you are collecting quotes, line up the start date before the permit is pulled, not after.
Is seawall repair exempt from FDEP permits? Often, with conditions. Florida rule 62-330.051(12)(a) exempts constructing, replacing and repairing seawalls or riprap in artificially created waterways. Subsection (12)(c) covers a wall in wetlands or surface waters between and adjoining existing walls, and (12)(d) covers batter piles, king piles or a cap used only to stabilize and repair a wall if they don't impede navigation. An exemption isn't automatic, so confirm it with FDEP's district office or your contractor. See the permits guide.
My wall was damaged in a storm. Does anything change? Rule 62-330.051(12)(b) covers restoring a seawall or riprap damaged by a discrete event within the last year, as long as the new wall sits no more than 18 inches waterward of the old one. Don't let the year run out while you wait.
When does the Army Corps of Engineers get involved? When the work is in navigable or federal waters. Charlotte County lists seawalls among the work an Army Corps permit can cover, and asks for all applicable state and federal permits to be submitted to the county.
What does a public seawall job look like? Charlotte County's page for the Bayshore Live Oak Park seawall replacement in Port Charlotte describes an Army Corps permit, followed by FDEP and SWFWMD approvals. A private wall may need fewer approvals, but it shows how many agencies can be involved.
Costs
How much does seawall work cost in Punta Gorda? A local contractor told WGCU in 2023 that a typical concrete replacement ran in the high $40,000s to about $50,000, and an older estimate put 80 feet of wall at $30,000 to $40,000. Both are dated. We haven't found published local prices for repairs, caps, docks or boat lifts. Your quote depends on length, access, anchors and permits.
Working with contractors
Are you a seawall contractor? No. We're a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent local marine contractors, who quote you directly. We don't do or inspect the work or set prices. More on how it works.
How do I check a contractor? Look up their Florida licence with the state's Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) before you sign. Ask who pulls each permit, and get the scope, materials and timeline in writing. Comparing more than one written quote helps.
What should I send with my request? Your street and canal, the rough length of wall, what it's made of, and what you see. Photos at low tide of the cap, the face of the wall and the yard behind it help a contractor most, along with any City or HOA notice you've received.
Docks and lifts
Does a private dock need a state permit? Possibly not. Rule 62-330.051(5)(b) exempts private docks, piers and docking facilities, with conditions on size and use. Check the conditions against your dock, and confirm with FDEP or your contractor. See dock repair and replacement.
Does a boat lift need a permit? We haven't found a lift-specific rule. Your contractor should confirm which permits apply, including any Army Corps permit where federal waters are involved, and county permit questions go to the county. See boat lift installation and repair.
Still not sure? Describe the wall and let local contractors weigh in.
