Punta Gorda canal seawalls after Hurricane Ian

The City of Punta Gorda maintains canal seawalls under its canal maintenance program. Whether your stretch of wall is in it is the City's answer to give. Get that answer first, then decide who to call.

Free to ask. We are a referral service, not a contractor, and we are not the City.

Start with one question to the City

We haven't confirmed which canals are in the City's program, and no list outside the Hurricane Ian rebuild zones turned up in our research. So we won't tell you whether your wall is the City's. Contact Public Works through the City's website and ask:

  • Is my stretch of wall, at this address, in the City's canal maintenance program?
  • If it is, which work zone or schedule applies to it, and what do I need to do before crews arrive?
  • If it isn't, can you confirm that by email, so I can show it to a contractor?

If your wall is in the City's program, the City's work and schedule come first.

Ask before you pay a private contractor for a repair. If the answer is no, the wall is yours or your HOA's to repair, and that is where a quote request helps.

The Ian rebuild in short

Hurricane Ian damaged canal seawalls across Punta Gorda in September 2022. The City has been rebuilding the walls in its program with FEMA funding, zone by zone.

The damage. The City has said Ian destroyed over 6 miles of seawall in Punta Gorda Isles and nearly a mile in Burnt Store Isles, as summarized in news reporting. WGCU reported in 2023 that nearly 600 Punta Gorda properties had some level of seawall damage.

The zones. The City split Punta Gorda Isles into five work zones. Each has a repair schedule that looks six months ahead and is updated monthly. The City has also been rebuilding walls in Burnt Store Isles.

The money. As reported, FEMA reimburses 95% of the City's cost and the City pays the remaining 5%. Reporting in 2023 blamed slow progress on FEMA processing and on an approval for the anchoring system.

The contracts. Fox4 reported that the City awarded 2023 contracts to Marine Contracting Group, RJ Gorman Marine Construction and Economy Dock Seawall & Dredge, with completion required within 18 months of the start. We name them only because the report did. They are not recommendations from us.

If crews are coming to your zone

In its rebuild zones the City has asked owners to prepare the waterfront side of the property before work starts. Treat this as what the City asked in the zones we read about, and check the City's current notice for yours.

Boaters have also been asked to keep to slow speed and low wake near walls that are still waiting for repair.

Before crews arrive, as the City asked

  • Remove anything within 10 ft of the wallappurtenances
  • Including electrical and underground lineswithin the 10 ft
  • Move your boatuntil work ends
  • Move floating docksuntil work ends

When to hire privately, and what we don't know

A wall the City says is not in its program is the owner's to repair. A private contractor can take that on. Docks and boat lifts are separate jobs, and it's worth asking the City what its program covers before you assume it includes them.

  • Private wall. Get written quotes, check each contractor's licence, and ask who pulls the permits. The permits guide lists the rules that come up.
  • Other work. See dock repair and replacement and boat lift installation and repair.
  • What we don't know. Our research in October 2026 found reports from 2023 and 2024 but no current status for the City's rebuild. Check the City's canal pages for today's schedules.

Canal seawall questions

Is my seawall maintained by the City of Punta Gorda? It may be. Only the City can confirm whether your stretch of wall is in its canal maintenance program, so ask Public Works with your address before you hire anyone. We don't publish a list of which canals are covered.

What if my wall isn't in the City's program? Then repairing it is up to you or your HOA. Get written quotes from independent contractors, check each licence with the state's DBPR, and ask who pulls each permit.

How do I find my zone's schedule? The City split Punta Gorda Isles into five Ian work zones, and each has a repair schedule that looks six months ahead and is updated monthly. The schedules are on the City's canal pages. We don't have a current copy.

What should boaters do near damaged walls? The City has asked boaters to keep to slow speed and low wake near seawalls that are still waiting for repair.

Who paid for the rebuild, and how long was it meant to take? As reported, FEMA reimburses 95% of the City's cost and the City pays 5%. Fox4 reported that the City's 2023 contracts required completion within 18 months of the start. We haven't found a current status.

Wall not the City's, or not sure? Describe it and let contractors weigh in.
